It's a special kind of series that goes 28 years without a sequel but still manages to feel contemporary when the follow-up finally does show up nearly three decades later. Windjammers 2 is a sequel to the 1994 NeoGeo classic, combining air hockey with lessons from the beat'em-up genre for an adrenaline-fueled arcade experience. Developer Dotemu hasn't strayed far from the original formula. The game is played from a top-down perspective and has you blasting a frisbee across the court to try and land it in your opponent's goal while frantically trying to protect your own. So, yes, on a certain level Windjammers 2 is basically Pong. That fails to do it justice, though, with a surprising level of depth and strategy emerging as you get better, thanks in no small part to elements such as special moves and a Super Meter that charges as you throw the disc, opening up devastating offensive and defensive options. Different characters also open up different possibilities, with the original six joined by five more, each boasting their own stats and special abilities. Similarly, different courts with their own goal zones and gameplay properties will keep you on your toes.
