Released with much fanfare in 1996, the Nintendo 64 – otherwise shortened by gamers to the N64 – was the Japanese manufacturer’s third video game console aimed at the home market. Coming to Europe, the USA and the rest of the world a year later – the console used cartridges to store and load games, a system that remained in place right up until Nintendo released its Switch unit in 2017.
The N64 enjoyed a great run with gamers around the world between its launch and 2002 – when it was discontinued and replaced by the highly popular GameCube. Famous for bringing the Super Mario character to prominence in the Nineties – the platform’s main competition in this era was the Sega Saturn and the Sony PlayStation.
