The concept of truck racing has always been appealing. If you've ever been to a truck racing event, you'll already know just how compelling it is to watch these giants being hauled around tight circuits. For those of you who haven't had this glorious opportunity, there's Super Trucks for PlayStation 2. From the beginning, Super Trucks is an extremely well presented game that makes a reasonable attempt at matching the sleekness and finesse of Polyphony's Gran Turismo 3. Navigating through stylish menus, players can customise racing mechanics before they've begun a single race. Tyre pressure and computer AI are just a couple of the game's many customisable features. Once you've decided which truck you want to race and selected your racing style, you can pit yourself against several other truckers in a series of challenging game modes including, championship, time trial and practice. As you might expect, the Super Trucks racing experience is quite different from the Gran Turismo standard found in other next generation games. Despite the fact that you are racing machines with massive quantities of horsepower, these beasts are far heavier and less responsive than your average racing vehicles. Strangely, it often feels like you're playing the game in slow motion. You seem to have plenty of time to make manoeuvres, but increased braking distances and the poor turning circle of these trucks means the game is as challenging as anything that's gone before it. At the end of the day, it's simply a case of getting from A to B as quickly as possible, but it's done in the most exciting way you can imagine.
