What could be more enticing than the frisson of danger that comes from trying to move many tons of machinery through mountains of muck? The added frisson that comes from attempting the same, but with sloppy brown mud swapped out for pretty white powder. That, plus a series of newly-added open world features that will make players from outside the truck simulation niche feel right at home. At its heart SnowRunner is, like MudRunner and SpinTires before it, very much in the business of having you navigate a very advanced and complex physics engine in tons of carefully simulated machinery, aka huge great trucks (aka lorries, if you're a brit). If you've ever stepped off a muddy footpath and onto a firmer grass verge you'll intuitively understand what it's about. The terrain is tough and unpredictable, and navigating it by applying just the right amount of power to just the right wheels, or by finding just the right tree to hitch your winch to, is thoroughly (sometimes surprisingly) engaging stuff. Where previous games just stuck some logs on your truck bed and sent you down perilous roads looking for a mill, however, SnowRunner has a much more focused mission structure. There are scientists to rescue, vehicles to recover, bridges to be mended. And there's your own fleet to manage, building it steadily as you acquire cash and even sending out rescue vehicles when your previous foray into the game's open world ended with you in a ditch. You can even bring in a pal, playing in four player co-op if you prefer it. As well as the base game, his new generation SnowRunner release includes the Anniversary DLC, which features the CAT 681 and International HX 520 trucks. SnowRunner should be niche stuff, but its scale and splendour shows that it has legs (or, *ahem*, wheels) in the mainstream market.
