When Rockstar made the decision to develop Smuggler's Run, it was inevitable that the game's controversial theme alone would sell the game. Sex, and particularly violence, are now intermittent visitors to video games, but smuggling is something rarely touched upon. Smuggler's Run's success isn't solely founded on immoral plot lines - it's also a really good game. Now it's coming to GameCube. Offering a selection of off-road vehicles such as quad bikes and armoured military trucks, Smuggler's Run: Warzones' players are loaded down with large quantities of illegal materials which they must transport to specific locations in as little time as possible. But it's no pleasure cruise. Government officials are aware of your wheeling and dealing and have sent formidable armies to hunt you down. In what is instantly recognisable as Driver-style gameplay, the enemy will attempt to bring your mission to a standstill by ramming your chosen vehicle until it claps out. Mission success is often dependent on manoeuvring skills. If you're carrying a heavy load, your game will become more of a challenge. A light load will make for an easier escape. The Warzones edition of Smuggler's Run features some five super-sized international environments, spread across North American and Eastern European territories, and demonstrate a good level of variety. Early stages features light terrain and the occasional dip, whilst later, unforgiving stages come with deep chasms and steep hill climbs. Complete with multi-player modes, weapons, 30 day and nighttime missions and a bonus licensed soundtrack, Smuggler's Run: Warzones is one the most extensive and purely playable games we've come across in ages.
