Activision's Lost Kingdoms was one of 2002's biggest surprises, combining Pokemon-esque random battles with a strong narrative, and a game world akin to Final Fantasy X. It's been less than a year, but the sequel to the critically acclaimed RPG is already upon us. Set some 200 years after the events that transpired in the original, Lost Kingdoms 2 is only loosely based upon its predecessor. Once again, the ill-fated land of Argwyll is under threat by an evil force, and this time all hope lies on the abilities of a new heroine, Tara. Raised by thieves from birth, Tara must put her skills and magic to the test against thousands of beasts before facing the source of this mysterious evil. Okay, nothing new there then, but compelling nonetheless, especially once you get into the game proper. As you explore the new and improved world of Argwyll, you'll inevitably stumble across those all-too-frequent random battles. But it is in these battles that Lost Kingdoms 2 stands apart from most other mainstream RPG's. Cards are your weapon here, and using the selection available to you, you must choose a card in order to summon a creature. Once done, that creature will enter battle and start wreaking havoc on nearby enemies. The real skill comes in choosing the right cards for the right enemies at the right time. Each of the 200 collectible cards has unique attributes, strengths and weaknesses, and range from hi-tech mechanised beasts to slightly more mythical fire-breathing dragons. In addition, creatures can now be summoned not just to overcome myriad beasts, but to solve a variety of puzzles as well. This new feature helps diversify Lost Kingdoms 2 no end and adds a fresh element to an ageing genre. Lost Kingdoms 2 is a fine RPG, promising more than 30 hours of gameplay spread across a very respectable 25 game worlds.
