From the creators of Tomb Raider comes Eve of Extinction for the PlayStation 2. In a refreshing change of pace, EOE is a 3D action game with a heavy emphasis on exploration, puzzle-solving, and fighting. EOE doffs its cap to Sega's classic Streets of Rage, but adds several thoughtful elements to the gameplay. In Eve of Extinction, players assume the role of Josh Calloway. Josh is an employee of the evil conglomerate Wisdom, a pioneer in the genetics field. Wisdom has plans to fuse rare metals with human souls to create devastatingly destructive weapons. After learning of Wisdom's plans, Josh flees but is captured, and is set to be turned into the ultimate weapon, the Legacy. This weapon is capable of destroying the whole world, and as such, the fate of mankind rests in your hands. The gameplay takes place across massive 3D levels that you are free to explore. Being a fugitive, you will encounter wave after wave of Wisdom heavies that are determined to take you down. This means some hairy moments are in store, as often you will be attacked from all directions by multiple assailants. This is where your weapon training comes in. One of the best features of EOE is the weapon system. It is fully upgradeable by using the ley crystals gained from defeating the enemy. The crystals transform the Legacy into a variety of different forms including swords, whips, and axes. The Legacy can also grant new abilities such as time-stop and anti-gravity. With a balanced blend of gameplay styles and an interesting storyline, Eve of Extinction is a way above average title. There's something for almost everyone in this game, and for those not already enticed, just give it a go.
