There are two distinct types of role-playing game in the video games industry. First there are those that place an emphasis on strategy and complex battles - these are typical of the PC RPG. Then there are those littered with random battles and storytelling, a formula typical to the console RPG. So it comes as a pleasant surprise that the Boston Animation developed Darkened Skye, a game that looks more akin to a PC RPG than a console RPG, has been released on GameCube. In this particular RPG offering, players assume the role of willing protagonist Skye of Lynlora, a sassy young Shepherdess with a restless spirit, a taste for adventure and a smart mouth. Familiar with the forces of evil and armed with her wits, spells and weapons, Skye finds herself on a quest for five ancient prisms that can save the world from yet another evil. Okay, it's an old, overused storyline like most other RPGs, but veterans of the genre will accept that such storylines merely serve as carriers for what are great thinking games, offering dozens, sometimes hundreds of hours of play. The same is true of Darkened Skye. The game is played in the third person, Tomb Raider-style, and you'll regularly be faced with enemy attacks and offensive magic spells. You must survive using the most efficient magic and weapons wherever possible. It's down to you to fight smart; no one else can teach you that. Despite the fact that Darkened Skye spans a specific number of levels - 30 to be exact - its gameplay is compelling and non-linear. Freedom of choice is a valuable attribute here, and five very distinct gaming locales ensure you can easily familiarise yourself with the game world as a whole. Darkened Skye is a fine GameCube RPG and definitely worth a good look.
